As I prepare to attend the third funeral in two days I am reminded of the brevity of life. At two of the funerals I have been asked to say a few words about the deceased. In many ways they made my job easy by how they lived.
There is nothing like a funeral to remind you that one day death will come calling for you, too. Studies have shown that one out of one people die! Perhaps it is a good question to ask, "What do I want people to say about me when I am gone?" I believe what really matters in life cannot be summed up with money, houses, or the plaudits of men. True riches are those things which money cannot buy and death cannot take away. Your family, your friends, and your faith in Jesus Christ are what really matters in this life. Live in such a way that your life preaches your own funeral. Live in such a way that you leave a rich legacy of virtue and faith. Live in such a way that your pastor doesn't have to lie at your funeral!
"The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom" (Psalm 90:10, 12 ESV).
