1. Prepare your heart.
Some people put more preparation into going to a football game than they do going to church.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon said, "We are told men ought not to preach without preparation. Granted. But, we add, men ought not to hear without preparation. Which, do you think, needs the most preparation, the sower or the ground?…It seems to me that there is more preparation needed by the ground than the sower, more by the hearer than the preacher."
2. Pray for the preacher.
The Apostle Paul, the great missionary and church-planter often asked for prayers. Your pastor also needs your prayers.
"Brethren, pray for us." 1 Thessalonians 5:25
"...meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains, that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak." Colossians 4:3-4
"Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith." 2 Thessalonians 3:1-2
"Pray for us; for we are confident that we have a good conscience, in all things desiring to live honorably." Hebrews 13:18
3. Plan on hearing from God.
You get out of church what you put into it.
- Do you expect God to speak to your heart through the songs, prayers, and the sermon?
- Do you expect to receive comfort from God?
- Do you anticipate the Holy Spirit to convict you of sin in your life?
- Do you expect and long for people to turn from their sins and receive Christ Jesus as Savior and Lord?
- Do you desire to see new people join the fellowship?
4. Prioritize your schedule.
"...but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth." 1 Timothy 3:15
If the Church is the pillar and the ground of the truth of God then shouldn't it play a significant role in our lives? Think counter-culturally! While the rest of the world sleeps in on Sunday mornings we should declare the value of giving God time at the beginning of the week. Getting ready for church is of more value than getting ready for school or work on Monday morning. If we seek God's Kingdom first, then the rest of our lives will fall into line more readily.
A. Plan to be in church regularly.
"...not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching." Hebrews 10:25
B. Get a good night's rest.
If you are burning the candle at both ends you are not as bright as you think you are. God deserves better than sleepy souls who value entertainment more than worshipping Him.
C. Get up early enough to eat breakfast.
I've been told that most people wake up two hours before the service begins. Half of all church goers don't eat breakfast before church.
5. Participate in the congregational service.
The late Vance Havner once said many Christians go to ball games and shout like Comanche indians then come to church and sit like wooden indians.
Don't just stand there or sit there. Here are a few ways to participate.
A. Worship, don't just watch.
Jesus said, "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." Matt 22:37
B. Think about the song lyrics, the Scripture readings, and the sermon.
Jesus said, "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." Matt 22:37
"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." Romans 12:2
"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17
"Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15
C. Take notes.
It helps you stay focused, it aids your memory, and it gives you something to review later.
D. Use your Bible.
I am amazed at how many Christians come to church without their Bible. Bring it. Open it. Follow along. Mark it.
E. Fight distractions.
6. Put the message you hear into practice.
A. Respond to the Word of God with faith and obedience.
"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does." James 1:22-25
B. Review the Word throughout the day and week.
"I will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways. I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word." Psalm 119:15-16
"My eyes are awake through the night watches, that I may meditate on Your word." Psalm 119:148
7. Pass on what you have learned from God to others.
Use the notes, observations, and truths you learned in discussions with others.
